Chapter 17

Then

The sisters who showed up at the sorority house were all drunk—and belligerent. Charity was yammering on about how they got kicked out of the bar because she’d hooked up with the boyfriend of some girl who worked there, something about her ID even though it was a really good fake—no, it wasn’t fake, but the girl in the license kind of looked like her, and she had practiced earlier so she could recite Lisette Shaeffer’s birthdate and address in case the bouncer quizzed her.

Like Marissa, Kai had monitored her alcohol intake that night. The two shared a nervous glance as the sisters came barreling in, dropping light jackets and heels like a snake sheds its skin, stumbling through the doorway and disrupting the calm of the pledges’ cleaning routine, breaking the promise that they’d get to leave.

Phoebe, her delicate features screwed up like she was sucking a lemon, was pissed off, and mainly at Charity—she kept sniping at her, growling under her breath. But when her eyes fell upon the five pledges, most of whom appeared at least somewhat alert with mops or garbage bags in hand, she smirked, and Marissa knew then that she was willing to transfer her anger to them.

“Why are all of you still cleaning? Shouldn’t you be done by now? You think you can just stay in our house and waste our electricity?” Her Long Island accent more pronounced than usual, Phoebe was heavily intoxicated.

A quick glance at Angela—the one who often gently advocated for the pledges when sisters acted unreasonably—confirmed that no one would save them from Phoebe’s wrath. Angela was still snoring away on the couch, drunk.

Jessica was the one who answered. “We’re sorry, Sisters. We’re just finishing up and leaving.” The pledges had been schooled to speak with deference to the sisters even when criticized for following orders. A sister is never wrong. Jessica moved to return the broom to the cupboard. Everything was pristine, anyway, and it was late.

“And what the fuck is wrong with Pledge Gonzo?” Charity asked. Hannah, whose pledge name was earned for her love of Hunter S. Thompson, Marissa hoped, rather than her larger-than-average nose, had slumped to the floor, mouth open and drooling.

“I think she might have had too much to drink and needs to go to sleep.” Marissa surprised herself by speaking up and retreated, overcompensating. “We are sorry for her indiscretions.”

“And look who showed up!” Abby this time, a loud redhead who played lacrosse. The pledges were required to go to the home games as a show of support, so they knew how tough she could be both on and off the field despite her diminutive size and prominent lisp. “Pledge Fugitive, how kind of you to attend our humble gathering!”

All this even though Marissa had only missed that first sorority function for work. “I’m sorry. I won’t miss anything again.” She looked down at the floor. Angela had drilled into their heads that pledges should be subservient and passive.

“That’s right, or else,” Danielle spat out at them.
